Mahara Coming of Age

With regret I was unable to attend this year’s iMoot but thankfully through the medium of recorded sessions, I could catch up on a few presentations I’d had my eye on.

There is an ever-growing interest in Mahara and it has not gone unnoticed by those interested that the release of Mahara 1.4 promises to take the ePortfolio to the next level. With this in mind Kristina Hoeppner’s presentation (Using Mahara for your ePortfolio – New features in version 1.4) topped of my list of missed iMoots to catch up on!

Mahara 1.4 is due for release in May you will be excited to hear, generously giving enough time for schools and universities in the Northern Hemisphere to test the upgrade before going live in the new school year. Here is a quick recap of the Mahara features and functionality covered in Kristina’s presentation:

Navigation

There have been a number of improvements to the navigation in Mahara 1.4, with a renaming and reshuffling of tabs to make navigation more intuitive.

Creating Portfolios

Creating portfolios has also been made easier with all the required functionality now being found on one screen in the top navigation bar, saving a lot of to-ing and fro-ing.  The various options when choosing the number of columns to use can also be found on one page for quick and easy editing.

Share Tab

The addition of the ‘Share’ tab within the Portfolio tab allows you to quickly see all the pages you’ve created in your Portfolio and who has access to which pages.

When sharing pages the user has the ability to give access to collections of pages, setting the same restrictions for each page.  This will save a lot of time having to go through the same process for a number of individual pages.

Shared Pages

Found under the ‘Groups’ tab, the Shared Pages is a full collection of pages that have been shared with the user. Within the screen will be included comments and a search option.

Topics Tab

Also within the Groups tab, this feature makes it easier to:

  1. See in which forums discussions are going on
  2. How many posts have already been made
  3. View the beginning of the latest post

Maharadroid

Acessibility for android phones comes within the core code of Mahara 1.4 allowing the site administrator to easily faciliate the mobile sharing of artefacts and the upload of files directly from the mobile phone (visit http://code.google.com/p/maharadroid to try it out)

Plugins

There are a number of new (and existing) plugins available to extend the functionality of Mahara, which fall under the headings of Authentication, Sharing and Aggregation

Authentication

Single Sign On and connection with Facebook, Twitter, Yahoo, Google etc. is possible via the Janrain plugin. The Shibboleth plugin will also work with Mahara 1.4.

Share

Users will be able to embed Twitter ‘Tweet’ and Facebook ‘Like’ buttons on their Portfolio Pages.

Aggregation

Google Apps and Windows Live continue to be available for integration with Mahara.

Kristina also touched on a few of the plans for Mahara 1.5:

  1. Skin Support allowing individual students to create their own themes for their portfolios
  2. Additional plugins (Flickr and Picasa for external slideshows)
  3. Compatibility with the Walled Garden Plugin allowing one to maintain a large scale Mahara installation which incorporates a number of individual institutions
  4. Support for even more external media (Wiki Educator, Glogster)
  5. Extended Mobile Support for other platforms
  6. Improved search functionality

So there you have it.  Some very exciting new additions to Mahara are on their way, I’m sure you’ll agree.  Thank you very much to Kristina for an informative and flowing presentation.

If you have any questions about Mahara or would like to get your ePortfolio up and running please feel free to give us a call on +44 (0) 28 9028 8830 or email joel.kerr@synergy-learning.com.

Thanks Moodle

Posted by Joel Kerr on 28 Apr
comments

You don’t need to be involved with Moodle for too long before you realize it has an enthusiastic community of users across the globe who are always singing the praises of the open source VLE.

As we know Welsh people sing better than most and one Moodle chorister has proved the point by coming up with a marvellous plan  to raise money for Moodle.org.

Karen Coyle, a member of the Wales Moodle Steering Group, first contacted Synergy Learning back in January to request sponsorship for a run of Moodle “Diolch” badges.  Karen explains further:

Moodle is the VLE of choice for most of Wales.  As a form of national “Diolch” (thanks in Welsh) to Moodle.org for Moodle we have started the Diolch.org campaign. The aim is to sell as many “Diolch” badges as possible, helping towards sustaining the development of this now important resource in education.

And Synergy Learning was only too happy to help

Getting sponsorship for the first batch of badges was our biggest difficulty, but that all changed when I approached Synergy Learning.  Their response towards the initiative was immediate and supportive and they have been integral in getting the diolch.org campaign up and running.

Having only recently been launched through Synergy Learning social networking channels and the UK Moodle Moot, interest in the badges has been explosive and continues to gather momentum.  Already Karen has been approached by Moodlers from other countries looking to take her idea to the likes of Germany and Holland.  This is something that Karen had aimed for from the outset:

I’m hoping other counties will take our lead and sell their own ‘Thanks’ badges.  If you do, please get in touch because I will buy one! Who knows I may end up with badges from all over the world?

Here’s a photo of the boss himself, Alex Büchner (can you tell?), proudly wearing his badge pinned to his Synergy Learning fleece.

Moodle Diolch Badge

If you want like to purchase a badge please contact Karen Coyle  karen@deeside.ac.uk or Richard Wenner richard.wenner@btinternet.com.

The pin badges are £2 each and ALL profit goes directly to Moodle.org. For more information visit Diolch.org

Go on… it’s for a great cause.

Work Experience Christopher

Posted by Joel Kerr on 21 Apr
comments

We have had the pleasure of Christopher McKibbon’s company this week, a work experience student from our good friends at St. Louis Grammar. He has been kind enough / harassed into writing a post for the blog to re-cap on his week…and here it is:

I am a Year 13 student currently studying Applied ICT, Business Studies, Technology and Accounts.

I’m researching career options and considering a career in ICT. I’ve decided to complete a work placement as it will give me an insight into the world of business and ICT and the working environment. The work placement will also make an excellent addition to my UCAS personal statement.

I’ve come to Synergy Learning because I am currently considering a future in ICT and as a company with a good reputation, it was highly recommended to me to complete my work placement at this company.

I’ve been introduced to the business and taught what goes on at Synergy Learning, the software and hardware they work with, as well as the well-known clients they work with. Everyone at Synergy Learning was very friendly and helpful and the whole environment was very comfortable.

Thanks to the team at Synergy Learning I have learnt many new skills during my time, I have used Photoshop for the first time and I enjoyed designing things with the software.  I have learnt how to help market a business via Facebook and Twitter and I have tested out some of their Moodle websites. I also learnt about the software needed to help the running of the business such as Salesforce and Basecamp.

My work placement has given me a good insight into the business environment and the use of ICT. It has helped prepare me for the future and has given me an idea of what it is like to work in an ICT business environment. It has also given me a better understanding of Moodle, Mahara and Totara and how they work, which helps me as my school uses Moodle and Mahara.

My time at Synergy Learning has been very enjoyable and I would like to take this opportunity to thank the team for their co-operation and for allowing me to participate in their work, allowing me to develop my knowledge and understanding of their business and what they do.

Christopher

We’d all like to thank Christopher for his help throughout the week and good luck with his A-levels! Also – enjoy yourself in Majorca!

UK MoodleMoot 2011

Posted by Joel Kerr on 14 Apr
comments

MoodleMoot UK is back on 19th and 20th April at Senate House London and it promises to be “even bigger and better” than ever. The Moots are always a great opportunity for Moodlers to get together, share information and discuss any developments that have occurred over the past year.

The title for this years Moot is ‘Strength through Diversity’ and the aim will be to “push beyond the mainstream” and explore the many ways in which Moodle is used today and the benefits it presents. Moodle no longer is confined to being the more cost effective solution; it competes across the board on flexibility, integration and personalisation.

MoodleMoot Keynote’s will come from:

  1. Grainne Conole, Professor of eLearning at the Open University
  2. Frank McLoughlin, CBE, Principle at City and Islington College
  3. Martin Dougiamas, Founder of Moodle
  4. Tim Anstiss, AppliedWellbeing

There are a number of other speakers throughout the 2-day event, among whom are two members of the Synergy Learning team. Our Co-Founder and Techical Director, Alex Büchner will cover “Course, Chat and Match – Creating a Moodle Course as a Game” (sounds like fun). We are also very pleased to have recently welcomed Mary Cooch into our team of Moodle Trainers, Mary has opted for the intriguing title, “It’s not as scary as I thought.”

For the full programme and list of speakers visit the Moodle Moot UK website.

Raising funds for Moodle.org

Synergy Learning has teamed up with the Welsh Moodle Users Group to help raise additional funds for Moodle.org by selling ‘Diolch’ pin badges. The badges will be launched at this year’s MoodleMoot – Karen Coyle (a member of the Wales Moodle Steering Group) explains the concept,

“The aim of the ‘diolch badges’ is to raise funds for Moodle.org and
to say a big thank you (‘diolch’ meaning thanks in welsh) to Moodle from Wales Moodle community

“I also hope that this initiative becomes a world first, encouraging other counties to produce their own Moodle.org ‘thank you’ badges and who knows…maybe start something!”

Badges will be available next Tuesday and Wednesday throughout the event; if you want like to purchase a badge before then please contact Karen Coyle karen@deeside.ac.uk (North Wales) or Richard Wenner richard.wenner@btinternet.com (South Wales).  The pin badges are £2 each and ALL profit goes directly to Moodle.org

If you are attending the Moot and would like to meet up with a member of our team please let us know by emailing info@synergy-learning.com. Hope to see you there!

How to Use Mahara

Posted by Joel Kerr on 11 Apr
comments

ePortfolio’s are becoming increasingly essential to online learners, as a means of collecting together artefacts and learning achievements in one space.  Of course this is not all ePortfolios are capable of.  I came across this useful video by University of St. Gallen (via @anitsirk on Twitter) explaining the different ways they are using Mahara.

As an approved Mahara Partner we at Synergy Learning have provided Mahara solutions for many clients and have developed a strong understanding of how it fits in around the wider elearning framework.  You can find more information on our Mahara services on the website.  If you would like to speak to one of the team email me at joel.kerr@synergy-learning.com or call +44 (0) 28 9028 8830.

ELA Conference 2011 // Technology on a Shoestring

Posted by Joel Kerr on 25 Mar
comments

It was my pleasure to be in Edinburgh this week for the ‘Technology on a Shoestring’ conference – a pretty apt title given the increasingly tightening strings on which companies have to balance their budgets.

Of course any chance to visit Edinburgh gets a thumbs up from me and combined with the opportunity to meet with elearning types, those in the know and those who want to know, is a double whammy.

Keynote came from Euan Semple who’s got an impressive CV that includes time at the BBC, Nokia, the World Bank and NATO.  Mr. Semple covered the benefits of Social Media and the challenges faced by the Senior Management in letting the employees loose on the various channels.

There was talk of the quality of networks compared to quantity, the need to make communications human as opposed to corporate and how to engage people by asking the right questions.  Conversations, conversations, conversations; that’s what’s important!

The emphasis was not on how far we had come but the possibilities that are yet to present themselves; the new businesses and products that will develop, the new businesses models that will evolve and most excitingly the freedom that working online can offer.

Other speakers included Mark Clark from JISC, Kenny Shaw of Screen Media, Pauline Randall from Florizel Media and…me.  That’s right.  As an exhibitor I had the opportunity to pitch the benefits of the ever popular Moodle and Mahara.

That aside, points covered were how technology can facilitate change, the need for innovation given the budget cuts, the need for positivity in the face of adversity and the importance of not hitting the bottle (actually the last point wasn’t covered, I made that up to check if you where still with me).

It is increasingly clear that through careful research and planning, structure and strategy, online services can offer the necessary savings required by companies in today’s market.  And the sooner you get started the sooner you get your head around the possibilities and the sooner you start reaping the rewards!

I’d like to thank the eLearning Alliance for the invitation and the possibility to showcase Synergy Learning.  I’ll leave you with one extremely naff but amusing quote from Stuart Hilles of the eLearning Alliance, “How can I soar like an eagle when I’m surrounded by pigeons?”

Take from that what you will.
